Morizumi Spoke Machine

My Spoke Broke

Today’s Walk-in: “Holy Moly-Trick-a-Mol-ee-Coswer-Bowser-Bic-Socka-Jocka-Wocka-Locka. I was out for a ride and this loose branch stuck, went into my wheel for a Half-Second and Bent my Spoke. You have Four Thousand Spokes In-Stock. Do you have a 282 mm Straight Gauge spoke to put on my bike?”

Four Thousand Spokes vs. A Tool

A Morizumi Spoke Machine allows us to Carry Less Spokes and Still Have the Potential to Outfit Thousands of Bicycles with the Right Length of Spoke.

We can cut and thread spokes of 14 and 15 gauge. The two step process is easy and clean. 99% of spokes fall in the category of 14 and 15 gauge. There are many bikes that require Aero-Spokes, 12 gauge or other weirdness. Your racing bike probably has specialized spokes. We carry 300mm DT Swiss spokes that can be cut to Any Size as long as it is shorter.

For the Local Wheel Builders in Boulder that Have Spokes, But Need Shorter Spokes

At .20 cents per spoke, we will cut and thread newly sized spokes for you. If you would like to learn How to Cut Your own Spokes, we are happy to teach the process to you if you would like to use the spoke machine.

Space Efficient Business

Standard Bike Repair is a Profitable Local Bike Shop with Low-Overhead and Space Efficiency

We are a bike shop in a Carriage Home Behind a Giant Cabin in the middle of Boulder. Hundreds of College-age Students live in the several two and three story condo & apartment buildings within our Block. Based off Arapahoe and in-Between 18th St. and 19th. St, the Arapahoe facing condominiums break up the String of Commerce from Valero Gas Station, The Land Rover Repair Station and the Rocky Mountain Anglers Fly Shop, Glass Store, Snarf’s Hamburgers and Auto Shop Yard. Behind these condominium buildings is an alley with more Student Apartment Living Situations and the Front Door of our Home Based Bike Shop. We are not in a Garage. The Dominating Space of Our Living Area is a Vaulted 10′ 5″ A-Frame Ceiling. Hanging from the rafters is 6 Diagonally Placed Bikes.

The alley entrance acts as a Front Door for the Business. The Driveway, lined by a 6″ Wooden Fence can fit one car. The Blue Patio Umbrella Looks Blue-er After the Rains. Cat Fighting is a Neighborhood Thing. It is Difficult to Surf the Net with Occasional Bursts of Fury and Screams in the Apartment Complex Courtyard. Squirrels race across the roof in the morning and at any time they please. The I-Will-Eat-Anything Squirrels get Major Food out of five alley dumpsters and those of us that dare to get near them. A 70 foot Tree Stands Tall above the bike shop. Colorado Trees Are in Any Space Not-Filled with Box-ous Apartment Buildings, Parking, and Teeny Yards. The Near-Downtown Block is not a New Suburb with Recently Planted Trees. The trees are full of years. Linked with all the Trees on the Block, they are good cover making hot days cooler. When the leaves fall, there is Mucho Leaf and Tree Things on the ground. At least one family of raccoons make the rounds. Not sure how the squirrels and night owls get along.

Location is key. Space efficient businesses will prosper over time.

All this adds up to Low-Overhead

We are not on Arapahoe between 18th and 19th Streets. We are in the alley behind it.

Space is Key

Our 500 square foot building houses one bedroom, bike shop, kitchen and bath. The Bike Shop is Split into Two Rooms with an Office Section, Parts Inventory, Bike Storage, Workbench and Repair Stand. Our Tools hang on the Wall. Like a Long Bus, the Rooms sit next to each other. Starting From the Parts Room facing the alley and moving to the Vaulted Ceiling Store and Repair Area, the Kitchen & Bath Act as a Hallway that leads to our living room. Nooks, crannies and peg board are scattered and organized in the Small House. Hooks hold wheels and frames. The Six Ceiling Bikes are consistently filled with customer and personal bikes.
