Wheel Building Class in Boulder, Colorado

Wheel Building Class Defined:

The Three Phase Class will teach you how to build a wheel using a few simple tools and science.

Constructing a Wheel is Three Phases

Would you like to learn how to build a bicycle wheel? At Standard Bike Repair, we will host you for a three hour session of One-on-One bicycle wheel building.

Phase One

The first hour is dedicated to selecting a hub, rim and spokes. Measuring the hub and rim take half the time. After we use the metric calipers to measure a dozen little places in the hub, we enter all of our calculations into an online Spoke Measurement Finder.

Phase Two

Before we lace the wheel, we need to cut spokes using our Morizumi Spoke Threading Machine. We can build just about any wheel imaginable.

A bike shop in Boulder has a Wheel Building Area for truing and bicycle spoke production.
After lacing, it is time to tighten the spokes and bring it to true. This process can take one to two hours. The spoke cutting is the easiest part. Measuring the wheel components like the rim is painstaking. At the end, you will have built a wheel and understand the physics of the art.

What Type of Wheels do we Fabricate?

We typically build 32 or 36 hole wheels with standard three-cross patterns. We do not build wheels with aero-spokes or otherwise different than the basic strong bicycle wheel that you have seen everywhere. They are quite easy to build with guidance. With a spoke threader and spare hubs and rims, you will always have the ability to manufacture the right size spoke.

Where do the Wheel Components come from?

We have new and used hubs, rims and spokes to lace wheels. Depending on the shop's needs, what we have in stock and customer preferences, we select components from our inventory.

Sounds hard. What if I take longer than Three Hours to make a Wheel?

For some people, it will take longer than three hours. We can make another appointment for a separate day or keep going as time allows.

What happens with the Wheel that we Built?

You do not get to keep the wheel, unless you want to buy it. The Wheel Building Class Fee is for the teacher facilitated class only. Based on component cost, we can sell you the wheel if you would like to buy it. For the most part, we keep the wheels and sell them to customers. Having quality wheels on hand for a variety of sizes is quintessential to a bike shop's success.

How much does the Wheel Building Class cost?

The cost of the course is $150.00. The completed wheel is not included.
